These fish are a favorite target of all serious anglers in the Northeast. Blackfish are great fighters and can often be challenging to catch. Shallow water light tackle jig fishing was perfected several years ago, and any angler that tries it is usually hooked. The fish make for great table fare and also freeze quite well. Tautog can be targeted in the spring and fall, but conservation minded anglers stick to the fall bite to avoid disturbing breeding fish.
